R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2003 marks the 125th anniversary of the
founding of Duffau Baptist Church in Erath County; and
WHEREAS, The church was organized on October 6, 1878, in the
community of Duffau, about 15 miles southeast of Stephenville; a
fire in 1924 destroyed the majority of the business area, and the
town's population began to decline; today, Duffau Baptist Church is
the only remaining institution in the community; and
WHEREAS, In 1935, a fire claimed the Duffau Baptist Church
building; the original section of the current facilities dates to
the mid-1930s, when the church was rebuilt, though there have been
recent additions, including an education wing and the doubling of
auditorium space; and
WHEREAS, Since its beginning, Duffau Baptist Church has
benefited from the guidance of approximately 50 dedicated pastors,
including Dr. Jimmy Allen, who served his first pastorate at Duffau
in the late 1940s; Dr. Allen later held the position of president of
both the Southern Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Radio
and TV Commission, where he won an Emmy Award; and
WHEREAS, Under the capable leadership of the Reverend Neil
Wade, the church today enjoys a membership that totals some 200
individuals from Erath and Hamilton counties; and
WHEREAS, Blessed with warm fellowship and inspirational
teaching, Duffau Baptist Church remains a tribute to the commitment
of its members, past and present, who have given generously of their
time, energy, and financial resources to ensure its continued
existence as a house of worship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Reverend Wade
and the members of Duffau Baptist Church on the joyous occasion of
the church's 125th anniversary and extend to all those involved
sincere best wishes for a memorable and fulfilling observance; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
