R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On July 12, 2003, Laura Jane Talbert was named the first-ever Miss Hidalgo County, to the immense delight of her parents, Rick and Lupita Talbert, and her many relatives, friends, and schoolmates; and WHEREAS, This crown is only the latest in a remarkably successful pageant career, during which she has been awarded the titles of Miss Springsweet 1997, Miss Onion Blossom 1999, and Miss Springtime 2000, among many others; and WHEREAS, A senior at Weslaco High School, Ms. Talbert is cocaptain of her varsity volleyball team and is a lettered member of the varsity basketball team; she is admired and respected by peers and teachers alike, having served as student council vice president during her sophomore year, as a sportswriter for the school newspaper, and as a member of the yearbook staff; she recently attended the Collegiate World Series at Texas A&M University, where she was honored with the event's highest award, and as a participant in the Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session, she was nominated for the title of Most Persuasive Debater; and WHEREAS, In addition to pursuing her scholastic and extracurricular interests, this hardworking young woman has devoted her time, talents, and resources to many worthwhile civic organizations in the Weslaco area; a junior volunteer at the Knapp Medical Center, she has volunteered and participated in such events as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the Rio Grande Valley Cancer Classic Golf Tournament, and her work in behalf of the Weslaco Lions Club has helped ensure the success of the group's Sharing Christmas Project; and WHEREAS, Ms. Talbert, who is graduating from high school as a Texas Scholar and Distinguished Achievement Plan Scholar, plans to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, where she will pursue a degree in forensic science before embarking on a career as a forensic pathologist; she can take great pride in her diverse accomplishments, and the citizens of the Lone Star State join in commending her for her exemplary achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Laura Jane Talbert of Weslaco on being crowned Miss Hidalgo County 2003-2004 and extend to her best wishes for continued success and happiness in all her endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Talbert as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
