R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The opening of Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School at 24831 Westheimer Parkway is ushering in an exciting new era of educational opportunity for students in the Katy Independent School District; and WHEREAS, The school is named for a noted local historian and daughter of one of Katy's founding families; Ms. Rylander served as the first president of the Katy Historical Society, was a founder of the Wright Museum in Old Town Katy, and wrote Applauding the Past, an illustrated history of the area; and WHEREAS, The 1936 salutatorian of Katy High School and alumna of The University of Texas, from which she earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy, Ms. Rylander is one of the original storytellers who has shared local history with students enrolled at Katy Elementary School; further, she is a past president of the school's PTA and helped buy the first spotlight for its auditorium; and WHEREAS, Her grandfather created one of the first single-room schools on his farm, while her father, John Henry Wright, founded the town pharmacy and with his partner, Dr. J. M. Stewart, was instrumental in building Katy's initial phone lines; her mother, Pauline Schlipf Wright, was a PTA volunteer who cooked lunches at home and delivered them to the schoolchildren; and WHEREAS, Residents of Katy may take pride in the school's diverse instructional programs and enrichment activities, which are being implemented to enhance the learning experience of all of the school's students; and WHEREAS, The staff of Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School is dedicating itself to the total education of its students, helping to develop tomorrow's leaders, and the school represents a significant new addition to the state's public school system; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the opening of the Roberta Wright Rylander Elementary School and commend all those associated with the school for their commitment to academic excellence.
