R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The wedding anniversary of two outstanding Texans
who celebrate 50 happy and fulfilling years of marriage is truly a
memorable occasion; Starr County residents Jose Leon and Margarita
Garcia celebrate a long and happy union on April 23, 2004; and
WHEREAS, Jose Leon Garcia and the former Margarita Carrera
exchanged their wedding vows at 6:30 a.m. on April 23, 1954, at a
ceremony held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande
City; the couple celebrated their honeymoon in Corpus Christi where
they stayed at the Robert Driscoll Hotel, which catered to famous
guests, including Bing Crosby's wife, Kathy Grant, and the
legendary John Wayne; and
WHEREAS, Jose Leon Garcia, a native of La Grulla, Texas, was a
member of the United States Army and completed tours of duty in New
Jersey, Texas, and Korea; his photograph was also featured in the
World Book Encyclopedia under Army; and
WHEREAS, Jose Leon established a successful 10-year career
with Borden, Inc., and a 25-year career as an independent dairy milk
distributor and entrepreneur; Mrs. Garcia, a graduate of Rio Grande
City High and bookkeeper for the local Edelstein's Furniture,
traded her position at the furniture store to work with her husband,
and together the Garcias built a happy home for their four beloved
children, Jose Leon, Sylvia, Ernesto, and Elda; and
WHEREAS, This devoted couple have resided together in Rio
Grande City for almost five decades and are members of the
Immaculate Conception Church; they both take great pride in their
growing family, which includes two daughters-in-law, one
son-in-law, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Garcia enjoy their retirement together;
their marriage has been enriched by cherished family memories and
many joyful times; and
WHEREAS, Since becoming husband and wife, this devout couple
have enjoyed an enduring relationship that has grown in love and
mutual respect with each passing year, and they remain a source of
delight and inspiration to the friends with whom they have shared
the richness of their life together; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Jose Leon and
Margarita Garcia of Rio Grande City on the occasion of their 50th
anniversary and extend to them best wishes for much happiness in the
years to come; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Garcia as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
