H.R. No. 233


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The New Braunfels community lost a distinguished civic leader on September 18, 2003, when James E. Goodbread passed away at the age of 62; and WHEREAS, Born on October 24, 1940, in Galveston, Mr. Goodbread graduated from Grapeland High School, where he was captain of the football team and lead actor in the school play; Mr. Goodbread earned a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Houston and served as vice president of McGregor National Bank before moving from Houston; and WHEREAS, Mr. Goodbread married the former Stephany Stott in Bellaire on June 6, 1963, and their union was blessed with two children, Stacy Goodbread Irons and James E. Goodbread III; in 1971, they moved to New Braunfels, where Mr. Goodbread partnered with his father-in-law to purchase National Hardware; a few years later, he bought Henne Hardware, which he owned until retiring in 1987; and WHEREAS, In addition to his professional success, Mr. Goodbread tirelessly served his community, serving for nine years on the city council, a portion of that time as mayor of New Braunfels; Mr. Goodbread worked on the planning and zoning commission and the New Braunfels Utilities Board of Trustees; furthermore, he was a 27-year Opa in the Wurstfest Association and a member of Rotary International; and WHEREAS, Of all his achievements in life, Mr. Goodbread was most proud of his family, to whom he dedicated himself completely; a devoted husband and attentive father, Mr. Goodbread treasured the loved ones who brought him so much joy; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan will long be remembered for his professional success and his commitment to his community, and his memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his family and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of James E. Goodbread and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his beloved wife, Stephany Stott Goodbread; to his daughter, Stacy Goodbread Irons and her husband, Robert A. Irons, Jr.; to his son, James E. Goodbread III and his wife, Sarah Anne Grow Goodbread; to his granddaughter, Lillian Alexandra Goodbread; to his brother, David E. Goodbread and his wife, JoAnne; to his brother, Larry W. Goodbread and his wife, Becky; to his aunt, Jewell Russell; to his mother-in-law, Louise Stott; to his sister-in-law, Connie Stott; to his nephews; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of James E.
