R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texas is a state with a unique political culture and
has, through recent events, made its robust democracy known
throughout the world, reaching as far as Ardmore and Albuquerque;
and
WHEREAS, The skills honed in this formidable laboratory of
freedom have propelled Texans to the highest levels of leadership
of this civilized universe, much to the admiration and joy of
citizens contained therein, excepting the French ones; and
WHEREAS, The fate of the world thereby depends on the
cultural vitality of this great state and the good humor of its
political leaders; and
WHEREAS, A new play, titled "Sonny's Last Shot," set within
this very chamber, has its world premiere in Austin on October 4,
2003, at the Arts on Real Theatre; and
WHEREAS, Characters based on actual events and personalities
dangerously similar to people sitting nearby will thrill the
members of this great body and cause them to consult their
attorneys; and
WHEREAS, Satire is a well-established defense in such cases;
and
WHEREAS, The play was created by the noted Texas writer
Lawrence Wright, a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, the
author of six books, and the screenwriter for The Siege and
Noriega: God's Favorite; and
WHEREAS, The play was directed by Marco Perella, a well-known
Texas actor, teacher, and author of the heart-rending memoir,
Confessions of a No Name Actor; and
WHEREAS, The play benefits the Sunshine Kids, a Texas-based
charity that provides group activities and emotional support to
children with cancer; and
WHEREAS, Port Arthur native and Hollywood acting legend
G. W. Bailey, who portrayed Sergeant Rizzo on M*A*S*H and Captain
Harris in the Police Academy movies, among many other distinguished
roles, is the executive director of the Sunshine Kids and a leading
actor in "Sonny's Last Shot"; and
WHEREAS, The Sunshine Kids organization has brought joy and
solace to thousands of children, helping them do what children
should do: celebrate life; and
WHEREAS, Anything that helps the Sunshine Kids can't be all
bad; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Lawrence Wright,
Marco Perella, G. W. Bailey, and the entire cast and crew of
"Sonny's Last Shot" for their commitment to the Sunshine Kids; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution will be published
and posted on the door of the Arts on Real Theatre as a declaration
by the members of this chamber that merriment still abides in this
great state, and that politics can be survived, even in Texas.
