R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Annie Mae Hunt of Dallas on September
25, 2003, at the age of 94, brought a great loss to the family,
friends, and many admirers of this beloved woman, and it is indeed
appropriate to remember her at this time; and
WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mrs. Hunt was born in Washington
County in 1909 and was married at the age of 15; possessed of only a
rudimentary formal education, but blessed with unbridled
enthusiasm and keen introspective skills, she overcame numerous
obstacles throughout her long life and emerged as a respected and
effective community leader and political activist, helping to elect
Representatives Jesse W. Jones and Yvonne Davis into office; and
WHEREAS, In 1983, she published the memoir I Am Annie Mae: An
Extraordinary Woman in Her Own Words, which detailed the trials and
tribulations of her life as a black woman in Texas; that popular
publication was made into a musical and film, Guts, Gumption, and
Go-Ahead: Annie Mae Hunt Remembers, that made her an icon for many
Texans; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hunt picked cotton in her youth and later
settled in Dallas, where she performed domestic work, after
divorcing her first husband; in the 1950s she demonstrated her
entrepreneurial skills as the owner of a cleaning business and an
eatery; she also sold Avon for many years and established herself as
a professional seamstress; and
WHEREAS, Annie Mae Hunt was a woman of integrity and
ingenuity whose passion inspired those around her, and although she
will be missed by all who knew and loved her, her spirit will live on
in their thoughts and deeds for many years to come; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Annie Mae Hunt and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her
family: to her daughters, Leona Hunt, Esther Prosper, Dorris
Bullard, and Othella Hunt; to her son, George Darden; to her 30
grandchildren and her numerous great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren; and to the many other relatives and
friends of this esteemed woman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Annie Mae
Hunt.
