R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, Through his selfless actions, Johnny Kornegay saved 
the life of a Marshall deputy, and he has been honored by the 
Marshall Regional Medical Center board of directors and employees 
for his heroism; and
	WHEREAS, A retired police officer, Mr. Kornegay ably serves 
the citizens of Marshall as a hospital security guard; on July 11, 
2003, while on duty, he witnessed a struggle between a deputy and a 
prisoner who was being transported to the hospital; and
	WHEREAS, Realizing the gravity of the situation, he quickly 
descended several flights of stairs to assist the deputy; 
disregarding his own safety, Mr. Kornegay used his own body to 
deflect a bullet from Deputy Judy Cadenhead's chest, sustaining a 
gunshot wound to his hand; and
	WHEREAS, This extraordinary act of unflinching bravery 
prevented an event that had the potential to devastate the lives of 
people around him; in a moment of sudden crisis, Johnny Kornegay's  
generous instincts and remarkable courage propelled him to take 
decisive action, and for his unquestioned heroism he is truly 
worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Johnny Kornegay for 
his exceptional act of valor and for the fearlessness and composure 
he has displayed in the face of grave danger; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for Mr. Kornegay as an expression of gratitude and highest 
esteem by the Texas House of Representatives.
