R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry M. Hilton of Midland has been chosen to
receive the 2003 John Foster Humanitarian Award, presented by the
Muscular Dystrophy Association--Midland; and
WHEREAS, Established in 2002 and named for a longtime Midland
broadcast executive and devoted civic volunteer, the award
recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to the
people of the Permian Basin; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hilton moved to Midland in 1993 to become senior
pastor of First Presbyterian Church, and over the past decade he has
immersed himself in the life of this community and shared his
talents and vision with many vital civic organizations; among the
groups to which he has given untold hours are Midland's Child
Victimization Task Force, Hospice of Midland, the Midland
Ministerial Alliance, the United Way, and the Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, A valued leader within his church, he has rendered
significant service to the Tres Rios, Missouri Union, and Cimarron
presbyteries and to the boards of trustees of Schreiner College and
the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hilton is a professional member of the American
Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the American
Association of Christian Counselors, and the Tres Rios Presbytery;
and
WHEREAS, This distinguished citizen graduated from Crane
High School in Crane, Missouri, in 1957 and from Missouri Valley
College in 1961; three years later he earned a master of divinity
degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, and in 1982 he received
his doctorate in ministry from the University of Dubuque
Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Beginning his ministry in 1964, Dr. Hilton spent the
first part of his career pastoring churches in Oklahoma and then
Missouri; he returned to Oklahoma in 1985 to accept the position of
senior pastor for First Presbyterian Church of Enid, and he served
that church for eight years before answering the call of First
Presbyterian in Midland; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hilton and his wife, Mary, are the proud parents
of two daughters, Carla and Carolyn; in his leisure time, he finds
relaxation in fly fishing, camping, and sports, as well as reading
and music; and
WHEREAS, Through his commitment to constructive action and
his skillful, energetic leadership, Dr. Hilton has contributed
immeasurably to the welfare of his community, and he continues to be
a source of strength and inspiration for all who know him; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Dr. Jerry M. Hilton
on the occasion of his receipt of the 2003 John Foster Humanitarian
Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association--Midland and extend
to him sincere best wishes for continued success in all his
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Hilton as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
