                                                                  H.R. No. 284


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of William Kent "Bill" Solether of Weslaco were deeply saddened by the passing of this distinguished gentleman on September 29, 2003, at the age of 75; and WHEREAS, Born on December 31, 1927, in Weslaco, Mr. Solether graduated from Weslaco High School, where he was an outstanding quarterback for the Weslaco Panthers; from 1946 to 1948, he served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Japan; and WHEREAS, Mr. Solether returned to Weslaco and made numerous contributions to his hometown; a lifelong farmer, he also worked for 23 years as a salesman for Stauffer Chemical Company, and in 1971, he and his wife, Deanie, built a family recreation center and miniature golf course, called Green Acres; later, he partnered with his son, Mark, to open Pecker's Bar and Grill, where Mr. Solether's amiable personality made him a cherished friend to countless patrons; and WHEREAS, He was a member of the Weslaco Lions Club and Elks Club, and served on the Weslaco Independent School District school board; he committed much time and energy to the First United Methodist Church, helping the church youth group, among other activities, and later attended the First Christian Church; and WHEREAS, Like his father before him, Mr. Solether spent his life working to see Weslaco grow and prosper; this dedicated family man and esteemed Weslaco citizen will long be remembered for the positive, lasting influence he had on the lives of those around him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Bill Solether and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his son, Jon Kent Solether; to his son, William Mark Solether and his wife, Delma; to his daughter, Bonnie Denise Wilson and her husband, Bob; to his grandchildren, Ashley Anne Wilson, Allison Amber Wilson, Robert Austin Wilson, Brook Nicole Solether, Barbie Denee Solether, Blake Sky Solether, and Summer Bo Solether; to his brothers and their spouses, Ned and Fran Solether and Tom and Richie Solether; to his sister, Nancy Rupe and her husband, Bill; to his nieces and nephews, Dian Solether Smith, Becky Williams, Greg Solether, Robert Solether, Michael Rupe, Allen Rupe and his wife, Becky, and Shari Menchaca and her husband, Walter; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William Kent Solether.
