R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The La Porte Bayshore Chamber of Commerce recently honored PPG Industries with its 2003 Salute to Industry award, recognizing the company for the role it has played in promoting economic prosperity, environmental vitality, and scholastic success within the community of La Porte; and WHEREAS, Since its opening in 1954, the La Porte PPG plant has grown exponentially, evolving from a small operation with only 10 employees to one of the world's leading producers of alkyl chloroformates, organic acid chlorides, pharmaceutical intermediates, and other specialty chemicals; the facility, which currently employs 200 Texans, manufactures more than 100 million pounds of chemicals each year for use in such products as herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and artificial sweeteners; and WHEREAS, Dedicated to preserving La Porte's quality of life, PPG employees have given generously of their time and resources to ensure the success of community projects; the company is a proud member of the La Porte ISD Partners in Education program, and over the course of the past 15 years its staff have volunteered as mentors, tutors, readers, and Junior Achievement teachers; in addition, PPG Industries strongly supports safety and environmental initiatives and is a member of the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care program; and WHEREAS, Through its community outreach efforts, PPG Industries has helped to make the city of La Porte a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family, and in doing so it has earned the lasting respect of employees and neighbors alike; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the PPG Industries plant in La Porte on receiving the 2003 Salute to Industry award and extend best wishes to all those associated with the company for continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for PPG Industries in La Porte as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
