H.R. No. 313
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In November 2003, five determined women from the
Houston Fire Department will travel to World Challenge XII in
Ottawa, Ontario, to compete in the Firefighter Combat Challenge;
and
WHEREAS, Dubbing themselves the "Chicas Calientes," Beda
Gutierrez, Yolanda Campos, Jocelyn Garriga, Isabel Sky-Eagle, and
Kristine Yruegas make up Houston's first team of women firefighters
qualified to participate at the national level of the challenge;
and
WHEREAS, This annual event attracts hundreds of U.S. and
Canadian municipal fire departments each year at more than 25
locations and seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and
demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public; and
WHEREAS, Wearing full bunker gear and breathing apparatus,
pairs of competitors simulate the physical demands of real-life
fire fighting by performing a linked series of five tasks,
including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping,
dragging hoses, and rescuing a life-sized, 175-pound "victim" as
they race against their opponent and the clock; and
WHEREAS, Worthy role models for this and future generations,
the women of Chicas Calientes have inspired girls to pursue their
dreams and demonstrated that strength, courage, and perseverance
will lead to success; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend team captain Beda
Gutierrez, Yolanda Campos, Jocelyn Garriga, Isabel Sky-Eagle, and
Kristine Yruegas for their dedication and extend to them sincere
best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the firefighters as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
