H.R. No. 314



R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, In November 2003, nine dedicated men and women from 
the Houston Fire Department will travel to World Challenge XII in 
Ottawa, Ontario, to compete in the Firefighter Combat Challenge; 
and
	WHEREAS, The men and women from the Houston Fire Department 
participating in the 2003 Firefighter Combat Challenge are Eric 
Kellmann, Hiram Ceballos, Stan Curtis, Chris Peel, Beda Gutierrez, 
Yolanda Campos, Jocelyn Garriga, Isabel Sky-Eagle, and Kristine 
Yruegas; and
	WHEREAS, This annual event attracts hundreds of U.S. and 
Canadian municipal fire departments each year at more than 25 
locations and is seen by more than 30 million people worldwide; the 
challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate 
the profession's rigors to the public; and
	WHEREAS, Wearing full bunker gear and breathing apparatus, 
pairs of competitors simulate the physical demands of real-life 
fire fighting by performing a linked series of five tasks, 
including climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, 
dragging hoses, and rescuing a life-sized, 175-pound "victim" as 
they race against their opponent and the clock; and
	WHEREAS, For their hard work and determination, this fine 
group is truly worthy of praise, and it is a pleasure to honor them 
as they prepare for this important competition; now, therefore, be 
it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Eric Kellmann, 
Hiram Ceballos, Stan Curtis, Chris Peel, Beda Gutierrez, Yolanda 
Campos, Jocelyn Garriga, Isabel Sky-Eagle, and Kristine Yruegas for 
their dedication and extend to them sincere best wishes for 
continued success; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for the firefighters as an expression of high regard by the 
Texas House of Representatives.
