R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 90th birthday of Nolan E. Barrick on October 30, 2003, provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the many achievements of this esteemed Texan; and WHEREAS, Born on October 30, 1913, in Pearland, Mr. Barrick attended Houston public schools, and he studied at the Rice Institute from 1931 to 1937, earning a bachelor of arts degree and bachelor of science and master of arts degrees in architecture; in 1938, he continued his education at the American Academy in Rome as the recipient of the Elliot Award; and WHEREAS, Mr. Barrick practiced architecture with William Ward Watkin for a number of years, and he served with distinction in the U.S. Navy during World War II; after leaving the military, Mr. Barrick taught architecture at Iowa State University and The University of Texas at Austin before joining the faculty at Texas Tech University in 1953, serving both as chairman of the department of architecture and as supervising architect; in 1965, he resigned as supervising architect to devote his time to the department; and WHEREAS, In 1978, he was appointed the first Kleinschmidt Professor of Architecture and retired from the faculty in August of 1979, having served as chairman of the department of architecture for 25 years; in retirement, Mr. Barrick wrote a book titled Texas Tech: the Unobserved Heritage, which covered the initial planning and architecture of Texas Tech University; and WHEREAS, Sharing his extensive expertise with others, Mr. Barrick participated in numerous professional organizations, including Tau Sigma Delta as national president and the National American Institute of Architects (AIA) Scholarship Committee; in addition, he has served the Lubbock chapter of AIA as president, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture as secretary, the Texas Society of Architects as vice president, and the Texas Society of Architects Foundation as a trustee; and WHEREAS, Mr. Barrick also benefited his fellow Texans by working with the city planning and zoning commission in Lubbock, the urban renewal agency, and the advisory committee to the governor on the development of the State Capitol area; and WHEREAS, Having traveled throughout Europe for more than 40 years, studying the art of stained glass, Mr. Barrick established Custom Glass, a studio for the design and fabrication of stained glass for residential and institutional projects; in 1993, he was joined by his wife, Betty, in his work, which has included significant projects for the Central Church of Christ in Amarillo, Lubbockview Christian Church in Lubbock, West Texas State University in Canyon, and others too numerous to mention; and WHEREAS, Looking over the past 90 years, this distinguished gentleman may take tremendous pride in his many accomplishments, and it is a pleasure to recognize him at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Nolan E. Barrick on the joyous occasion of his 90th birthday and extend to him best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Barrick as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
