SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the General Motors Arlington Assembly Plant on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated in January of 2004; and WHEREAS, Since January of 1954, when the plant first assembled the Pontiac Chieftain, it has produced a total of 7.5 million vehicles; and WHEREAS, An innovative leader in the industry, the General Motors Arlington Assembly Plant converted during the late 1990s from assembling cars to assembling the 400 series pickup trucks and such sports utility vehicles as the Chevrolet Suburban and the Chevrolet Tahoe; it is the sole producer of the luxury sports utility vehicle, the Cadillac Escalade; and WHEREAS, By consistently upgrading its facilities, the plant has always operated a state-of-the-art production site; a new building for tire, wheel, and seat assembly was built in 1974; in 1988, it added a new building for a paint shop; and in 2000, a new body shop building for the 800 series sports utility vehicles was also added; and WHEREAS, In tribute to its high standards of craftsmanship, the assembly plant has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Harbour Benchmark recognition for the full-size sports utility vehicle; and WHEREAS, The assembly plant employs 3,000 individuals, contributes immeasurably to the local economy, and donates funds to community activities; and WHEREAS, The General Motors Arlington Assembly Plant is highly regarded for its contributions to the prosperity and the community life of the City of Arlington; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend best wishes to all associated with the plant as they prepare to celebrate its 50th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the plant as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
