S.C.R. No. 3  




SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Tyler and Texans across the state in mourning the loss of A. W. Riter, Jr., who died September 23, 2003, at the age of 79; and WHEREAS, A longtime East Texas businessman and civic leader, A. W. "Dub" Riter was a member of the board of regents of The University of Texas System; he was well known for his dedication, his loyalty, and his generosity to The University of Texas at Tyler, where he served on the development board; and WHEREAS, During a lifetime of public service, he received many well-deserved honors; he was named East Texan of the Year by the Texas Chamber of Commerce and received the Business Hall of Fame honor from Junior Achievement of Greater Tyler; and WHEREAS, Very active in civic affairs, Dub Riter served as president of the East Texas State Fair Association, the East Texas Hospital Foundation, and the East Texas Symphony Association; he was a member of the Governor's Business Council Executive Committee and the Governor's Select Task Force on Public Education; and WHEREAS, A beloved and respected Texan, Dub Riter will long be remembered as one of this state's most treasured citizens; he was a man of integrity, strength, and generosity who gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of A. W. Riter, Jr.: his wife, Betty Jo Baxter Riter; his son and daughter-in-law, A. W. "Whit" Riter III and Cynthia; his daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Tom Shoemake; his six grandchildren and his great-grandchild; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Legislature, and that when the legislature adjourns this day, it do so in memory of A. W. Riter, Jr.
