SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 17
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Central Baptist Church of College Station on the occasion of the opening of its new worship center, which was dedicated on June 29, 2003; and WHEREAS, The Central Baptist Church has its roots in a congregation that originated on September 11, 1925, when 81 people met in the Old Brazos County Courthouse to organize the College Avenue Baptist Church; the first church building was located at the corner of College Avenue and 25th Street, and later, the church acquired a tract on Coulter Drive, where in 1954 a new sanctuary was built to accommodate 1,000 churchgoers; in 1957, the congregation chose the name of Central Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, On April 24, 2000, the church closed on its purchase of a 65-acre tract on Highway 158, and architects were soon hired to complete a master plan for new facilities; in 2001, the church signed a contract with Tellegsen Construction Company of Houston, and on November 18, 2001, the Central family held a groundbreaking ceremony; this June 29, approximately 3,700 people from the community gathered for the special dedication of the new worship center, a praise service, and an open house; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Central Baptist Church has ministered faithfully to the spiritual needs of innumerable Christians, and the church's membership has contributed to the community in hundreds of ways; and WHEREAS, Through the guidance and wise stewardship of its pastors, and the leadership of its current pastor, the Reverend Chris Osborne, the church has flourished and undertaken many projects that have benefited its community, and it has a strong outreach program with Texas A&M students; and WHEREAS, Central Baptist Church has been a source of strength for its members throughout its history, and it is a pillar of the community; the new worship center allows its congregation and its clergy to better fulfill the church's holy mission; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and the members of Central Baptist Church on the dedication of their new worship center; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
