SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 19
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
recognizing the Denton Record-Chronicle on the occasion of its
100th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, On August 3, 1903, the owner of the Daily Record
and Chronicle, William Cunningham Edwards, published the first
edition of his paper, which would later become the Denton
Record-Chronicle; the newspaper originated from the merger of
the Denton County Record, established in 1898, and The Denton
Chronicle, established in 1882; and
WHEREAS, The newspaper was owned by the Edwards family until
1945 and then was bought by Riley Cross; his family continued
ownership until 1999, when the paper was purchased by the Belo
Corporation, one of the nation's largest media companies;
Mr. Cross's grandson, Bill Patterson, is the paper's current
publisher and chief executive officer; and
WHEREAS, As the City of Denton grew from a population of
4,187 in 1903 to more than 90,000 today, the Denton Record-Chronicle
recorded its changes, from births and deaths to business openings
and closings; and
WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Denton Record-Chronicle has
played a major role in the progress of Denton and the surrounding
communities; it has served as a voice for its citizens, as well as
a chronicle of the history of the community; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the
publisher, owners, and staff of the Denton Record-Chronicle for
the many contributions the newspaper has made to the citizens of
Denton and to the state and extend to them best wishes for a
joyous centennial celebration; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
