SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 35
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Kim J. Askew, who has been named chair of the Board of
Directors of the State Bar of Texas; and
WHEREAS, Kim Askew is a partner in the Dallas law office of
Hughes & Luce LLP, which she joined in 1984 after serving as a
clerk with the former chief judge of the United States District
Court for the Northern District of Texas; she is a member of the
firm's Management Committee and practices in the Trial and
Dispute Resolution and Labor and Employment sections; and
WHEREAS, Kim has practiced before federal district courts
around the country and has been named one of the Best Lawyers in
America for her commercial litigation practice; she has also been
recognized as Best Lawyer in Dallas for her labor and employment
practice; and
WHEREAS, Before assuming her position as the chair of the
Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas, she served on the
organization's Executive Committee and as chair of its
7,500-member Litigation Section; and
WHEREAS, This accomplished attorney-at-law has held
numerous positions in the American, Texas, and Dallas bar
associations; she served on the American Bar Association's
Commission on Women in the Profession and cochaired the Judiciary
Committee of the Dallas Bar Association; she also chaired the
Evidentiary Panel of the District 6A Grievance Committee for the
State Bar of Texas; and
WHEREAS, A widely published author and national speaker on
various discovery, evidentiary, pretrial, trial, and labor and
employment issues, Kim coauthored Texas Civil Pretrial Practice
for West Publishing; and
WHEREAS, She has received numerous awards for her bar
affiliations, and in 1999, she received the Gene Cavin Award, the
State Bar of Texas' highest award, for her contributions to
continuing legal education; and
WHEREAS, Kim is a 1979 summa cum laude graduate of
Knoxville College and a 1983 graduate of Georgetown University
Law School; she was named one of the inaugural Outstanding
Alumnae of the law school based on her achievements in the legal
profession, and she is a member of the Georgetown University
Board of Regents; she has served on the board of directors for
several community organizations, including the Greater Dallas
Chamber of Commerce and Paul Quinn College; she is a director of
the Dallas Museum of Art; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary professional, Kim Askew is highly
respected for her legal expertise and her community involvement,
and she deserves recognition for her many accomplishments; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Kim J. Askew
for her exceptional achievements and extend to her congratulations
on her appointment as chair of the Board of Directors of the
State Bar of Texas; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
