SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 36
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the 100th anniversary of the Porter Demonstration Farm
and the work of the Texas Cooperative Extension in Kaufman County;
and
WHEREAS, In 1903, a cooperative effort between
Captain J. B. Porter, a farmer in Kaufman County, and the
United States Agricultural Extension Service led to the creation
of the nation's first experimental farm project, the Porter
Demonstration Farm; and
WHEREAS, In October of 1903, techniques proposed by the
United States Department of Agriculture to increase agricultural
productivity met with great success at the Porter Farm; as a
result, a network of farm demonstration agents was soon created
to introduce these methods to farmers throughout the nation;
moreover, the advances made at the farm led to the founding of
the Cooperative Extension Service, known today as the Texas
Cooperative Extension; and
WHEREAS, The week of October 19 through 25, 2003, has been
designated Farm Demonstration Week, and special events will take
place in Terrell and the surrounding area to mark the occasion;
individuals representing local, state, and national organizations
will participate in the festivities; and
WHEREAS, The Porter Farm has been in continuous operation
for 120 years and remains a Porter family enterprise; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Porter family will be in attendance
at a special event at the Performing Arts Center in the area on
October 25, 2003; together with many in the community, they will
celebrate their family's historic role in Texas agriculture;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the Porter
family members and all associated with the Texas Cooperative
Extension in Kaufman County for their invaluable contributions
to the field of agriculture and extend best wishes to them for an
enjoyable Farm Demonstration Week; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of Porter Demonstration Farm.
