SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 38
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Texas A&M University--Commerce on the occasion of the dedication of its Charles J. Austin Industrial Engineering and Technology Building on October 2, 2003; and WHEREAS, The building has been named for Dr. Charles J. Austin, who served as the eighth president of the university from 1982 to 1986; the former president will attend the ceremony with his wife, Caroll, and several other family members; and WHEREAS, Dr. Austin earned a bachelor's degree from Xavier University in Ohio, a master's degree from the University of Colorado, and a doctoral degree from the University of Cincinnati; prior to assuming the presidency of Texas A&M University--Commerce, he served as dean of Graduate Studies at Trinity University and as vice president for Academic Affairs at Georgia Southern College; in addition, he had previously held positions in health care administration with the Commission on Education for Health Administration, the University of Colorado Medical Center, and the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; and WHEREAS, A highly regarded president during his four-year tenure at Texas A&M University--Commerce, Dr. Austin was dedicated to promoting academic excellence and contributed greatly to the high academic standard the university upholds today; and WHEREAS, During his administration, a strong scholarship program was developed and a new organizational structure was established among the academic divisions of the university; the Office of Enrollment Management was formed, and the Office of School Relations was separated from the Office of Admissions, giving it new responsibilities for student recruitment; he also oversaw repairs and modifications made to the Music Building, the Hall of Languages, the Social Sciences Building, and the old Zeppa Recreation Center; Gee Library's top three floors were also added while he was president; and WHEREAS, Dr. Austin performed the duties of president of Texas A&M University--Commerce with deep commitment and dedication, and his outstanding leadership has left a lasting imprint on the school and its community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend best wishes for an enjoyable dedication ceremony for the Charles J. Austin Industrial Engineering and Technology Building at Texas A&M University--Commerce; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this occasion as an expression of regard from the Texas Senate.
