SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 58
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
to recognize Rosa Walker, who is retiring after 36 years of
outstanding service with the Texas American Federation of Labor
and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); and
WHEREAS, A native of Hemphill, Rosa graduated from
Pineland High School and embarked on a career at Southwestern
Bell Telephone Company; and
WHEREAS, After joining the Communication Workers of
America, she pursued her growing interest in labor unions; she
served as a commercial job steward and became a member of the
executive board of the Communication Workers of America; and
WHEREAS, Rosa joined the union movement full-time as an
organizer for the Industrial Union Department of the AFL-CIO;
she later worked for the Harris County AFL-CIO, and in 1965, she
joined the Texas AFL-CIO; and
WHEREAS, Rosa served as the women's activities director for
the Texas AFL-CIO, and she is now retiring as the organization's
director of Community Services/Volunteers; in this position,
she has coordinated union disaster relief operations, voter
registration and get-out-the-vote drives, lobbying activities on
specific issues, and preparations for special labor events; and
WHEREAS, A leading figure in the Texas labor movement, Rosa
has played a major role in the recruitment of capable women into
the union cause; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen, Rosa served as a state
vice president of the Texas Coalition of Labor Union Women, was a
founder of the Texas Consumer Association, and is a former member
of the Texas Judicial Conduct Commission; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, Rosa is
highly regarded by her colleagues in the labor movement, and her
presence as the director of Community Services/Volunteers for
the Texas AFL-CIO will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Rosa Walker
for her devoted service to the Texas American Federation of Labor
and Congress of Industrial Organizations and extend best wishes
to her on the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
