SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 65
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Peggy McGowen, state president of the Ladies Auxiliary
to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, on the
occasion of her Homecoming, which will be held in Arlington
September 26 through 29, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Peggy was elected and installed as state president
of the Ladies Auxiliary on June 21, 2003, in Corpus Christi during
the organization's 77th annual convention; she has previously
held the state offices of guard, conductress, chaplain, and
junior and senior vice president; and
WHEREAS, For her theme, Peggy has chosen "Honoring
Veterans Who Proudly Served"; and
WHEREAS, The state branch of the Ladies Auxiliary to the
Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States was established
on May 3, 1927; today 37,000 individuals from across the state
belong to the organization; and
WHEREAS, As state president of the Ladies Auxiliary, Peggy
will focus on expressing the pride our nation feels for all its
veterans and on promoting the Americanism Program in our schools;
under her leadership, members of the auxiliary will show kindness
to our communities and veterans and will pray for peace throughout
the world; and
WHEREAS, During the past year, the organization's members
devoted over 250,000 volunteer hours to assisting veterans in
veterans hospitals and in nursing homes; they also conducted
rehabilitation programs for veterans and provided assistance to
homeless veterans; they raised $67,000 for "Operation Uplink," a
program that allows veterans living overseas and in hospitals to
make free telephone calls to their loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Peggy McGowen is committed to the patriotic
principles of the Ladies Auxiliary, and her superior leadership
will be a valuable asset to the work of the organization and its
future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to
Peggy McGowen on the occasion of her Homecoming and extend best
wishes to her for a successful administration as state president
of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the
United States; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
