SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 74
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Dr. Dwight J. Fennell for his distinguished record in
the field of higher education and to congratulate him on being
named president of Paul Quinn College in Dallas; and
WHEREAS, Selected as president by a unanimous vote of the
college's board of trustees, Dr. Fennell will be inaugurated on
October 17, 2003; upon joining the college in 1998, Dr. Fennell
served as its provost and was named interim president last year;
under his leadership, the college has had phenomenal growth, the
retention of students has increased, and the operational budget
has remained on firm ground; and
WHEREAS, A native of Miami, Florida, Dwight Fennell earned
a bachelor's degree in history and government at Saint Augustine's
College in Raleigh, North Carolina, a master's degree in history
at Atlanta University, and a second master's degree in education
at Florida International University in Miami; and
WHEREAS, He earned doctoral degrees in philosophy and
education from Florida State University in Tallahassee and began
his career in higher education at Florida International
University; and
WHEREAS, After Dr. Fennell left the state university
system of Florida, he taught at Morris Brown College in Atlanta
and later at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh; a tenured
professor of history and education, he also served as the
college's vice president for academic affairs for seven years;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Fennell has been a positive influence on the
lives of the students and faculty of Paul Quinn College, and his
superior leadership as president will undoubtedly be a positive
asset to the future of the institution; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend
Dr. Dwight J. Fennell for his outstanding achievements in education
and extend to him congratulations on being named 32nd president of
Paul Quinn College; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
