SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 81
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the family and friends of Aldo Tatangelo in honoring him on the grand occasion of his 90th birthday; and WHEREAS, The second of five children born to Italian immigrants Nicola and Bettina Tatangelo, Aldo was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on September 16, 1913; from an early age he worked in his father's jewelry manufacturing business; and WHEREAS, Well known for his determination and persistence, Aldo served in the United States Navy during World War II, took night classes in business administration, receiving a certificate from Brighton and Stratton Colleges, and studied plastic engineering at Rhode Island State College; and WHEREAS, In 1942 Aldo married Alice Natalie Anderson DeLong; together they had three children, Aldo, Jr., Linda and Robert; and WHEREAS, An astute and successful business person, Aldo formed the Atlantic Optical Company, which became the second largest producer of sunglasses in the United States; he and his family moved to Mexico City in 1958 to expand his operations, and at the age of 50 he settled in Laredo; and WHEREAS, With a lifelong record of volunteer public service, Aldo was elected Mayor of Laredo in 1978; he is remembered as the man responsible for paving Laredo's streets, establishing a pension plan for city employees, reorganizing the city's street department, developing a Parks and Recreation Department and promoting affordable housing for low-income families; under his leadership, Laredo enjoyed a period of tremendous change and growth; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize Aldo Tatangelo as a legend of his hometown and a treasured citizen of his adopted state and wish him continued health and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Aldo Tatangelo as a memento of this special day in his life.
