SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 82
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize October, 2003, as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in
Texas; and
WHEREAS, Studies show that cancer is often the chief health
concern for American women, and breast cancer is the most common
form of cancer among women and the second-leading cause of cancer
death for women; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, an estimated 211,300 new cases of breast
cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States,
and an estimated 39,800 women will die of breast cancer; in
addition, it is estimated that 1,300 men will be diagnosed with
and 400 men will die of the disease; and
WHEREAS, Deaths from breast cancer are preventable; early
detection is a key component of successful treatment of breast
cancer for it is at this stage that more treatment options are
available, treatment can be less invasive and survival rates are
greater; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the month of October, public service
organizations, professional medical associations and
governmental agencies work in partnership to raise awareness
of the disease and provide access to screening services; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize
October, 2003, as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Texas and
encourage all citizens to become informed about a disease that
is potentially life-threatening but highly treatable; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
acknowledge the importance of breast cancer awareness in the
State of Texas.
