SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 95
In Memory
of
Alma Lee Jones
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Bastrop in mourning the loss of Alma Lee Jones, who died July 28, 2003, at the age of 81; and WHEREAS, Alma Jones was born January 12, 1922, in Cedar Creek, Texas; she graduated from Bastrop High School in 1939; Alma earned a bachelor's degree in literature from The University of Texas at Austin in 1945 and a master's degree in 1955; and WHEREAS, Alma Jones began her teaching career in a one-room school in Cedar Creek in 1940 when she was 17 years old; from 1942 to 1945, she taught at Bastrop Elementary School; she then enjoyed a long career teaching English and sponsoring the yearbook staff at Bastrop High School from 1945 until her retirement in 1983; and WHEREAS, Although Alma Jones was known as a modest person who did not draw attention to herself, she made many contributions to teaching, a profession she dearly loved; she dedicated 42 years of her life to engaging countless numbers of students in the joy of learning; she had a positive influence on the lives of her many students, one of whom was State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos; and WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity, Alma gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and WHEREAS, Alma Lee Jones lived her life to the fullest and was a devoted mother, and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Alma Lee Jones; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alma Lee Jones.
