SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 108
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Bay Area Council Boy Scouts of America in Galveston
for its many years of outstanding service to the community and
its exceptional achievements in 2002; and
WHEREAS, Organized in April of 1919, the Bay Area Council
Boy Scouts of America particularly enjoyed increased membership
and great success in a wide array of its programs in 2002; and
WHEREAS, During the past year, 78 members earned the rank
of Eagle Scout, thereby becoming members of an elite corps that
few Boy Scouts attain; and
WHEREAS, The council's fall, winter, and summer camps saw
a tremendous growth in attendance, and more than 1,800 young men
participated in either day camp or Cub-O-Ree activities; and
WHEREAS, The council's School Night for Scouting event
resulted in more than 1,100 new Boy Scout members, with total
membership increasing by six percent over the previous year; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of Scouting Fund Drive raised more
than $250,000 to support boy scouting activities, and the council
once again finished the year with a balanced budget; and
WHEREAS, More than 200 people attended the Distinguished
Citizen Luncheon that honored Dr. W. Michael Kemp, vice president
and chief executive officer of Texas A&M University at Galveston;
Robert Gates, new president of Texas A&M University and an
Eagle Scout, was the keynote speaker for the event; and
WHEREAS, Through its outstanding programs, the Bay Area
Council has demonstrated its longtime commitment to the growth
and development of young men, and it has undoubtedly had a
positive impact on the lives of many young Texans; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the Bay Area
Council Boy Scouts of America for its dedicated service to
countless young men, and extend congratulations to the council on
its many accomplishments in 2002; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the council as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
