SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 112
In Memory
of
Filiberto Martinez
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of Filiberto Martinez,
who died October 4, 2003, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, Filiberto Martinez was born on August 22, 1922, in
Dallas County to Jose C. Martinez and Maria de Jesus Martinez; he
graduated from Crozier Technical High School in Dallas, where he
was the cartoonist for the school newspaper; and
WHEREAS, After completing high school in 1941, Filiberto
enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served in
World War II; he married Pauline Zavala after the war, and the
couple was blessed with three children and numerous
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Filiberto worked as a chemist for many years; he
was a dedicated union member and was actively involved with Local
124, serving it as secretary, treasurer, and vice president; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen, Filiberto was respected in
the community for his many accomplishments; he was a regular
volunteer at the Ledbetter Neighborhood Association and the
Eladio R. Martinez Learning Center; and
WHEREAS, Filiberto took part in the political life of the
community and was an active member of the Mexican-American
Democrats; in 1990, he was named "Chicano" of the year for his
work with the organization; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he was a member of Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church; together with his wife, he was an
administrator for the Cursillo Center, which offers programs for
religious renewal, for more than 32 years; and
WHEREAS, Filiberto was a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Filiberto R. Martinez: his
wife, Pauline Martinez; his daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and
Tony Sanchez; his sons, Edmund Martinez and Filiberto Martinez,
Jr., and his wife, Rosa; his daughter-in-law, Martha Martinez;
his brother, Henry Martinez; and his five grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Filiberto R. Martinez.
