SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 116
WHEREAS, United States military veteran Broughton Lynn Hand
of Anahuac has earned the respect and admiration of his fellow
citizens through his distinguished military service and his
dedication as a civic leader; and
WHEREAS, Born in Trinity on April 8, 1920, Mr. Hand
graduated from Anahuac High School in 1939 and attended Marshall
College before joining the army in 1942; he served as a
demolition expert with the 504th regiment of the 82nd Airborne
paratroop division and parachuted into Normandy on D-Day,
June 6, 1944; and
WHEREAS, Captured by German forces five days after the
Allied assault, Mr. Hand spent the remainder of the war in
prisoner-of-war camps in Germany and Czechoslovakia; he was
injured in a mining accident during his incarceration and was in
a Nuremberg hospital when his camp was liberated in May of 1945;
and
WHEREAS, Upon his return to Anahuac, Mr. Hand began a
courtship with a young war widow, Mary Lillian Ledet Syer, who
became his wife on October 22, 1948; together they raised her
daughter, Mary Phoebe, and two more children, Myra Louise and
Lynn Davis, and they have since been blessed with seven
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hand's professional career included work in
sales with Macobar Drilling Products and Trinity Valley
Lumberyard; he also worked as a supervisor of drainage for the
Trinity Bay Conservation District; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the
Order of the Purple Heart, this patriotic gentleman currently
serves as commander of the Texas Golden Triangle Chapter of
Ex-POWs; he is a past commander of the Freeman Spath Post of the
American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans and a former
member of the Governor's Prisoner of War Advisory Committee; in
addition, he served as Chambers County Veterans Service Officer
for 13 years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hand's service to his country and to his
fellow citizens is truly inspirational, and it is indeed a
privilege to recognize this exemplary gentleman and to pay
tribute to his life and many accomplishments; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor
Broughton Lynn Hand and extend to him sincere best wishes for
continued happiness and success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
Mr. Hand as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
