SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 121
In Memory
of
Hulda Rhodes Kitchen
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of Hulda Rhodes Kitchen,
who died September 6, 2003, at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, Hulda was born in Columbia, Missouri, on
September 25, 1918, to John Franklin Rhodes and
Helen Williams Rhodes; she grew up in Kansas City, Missouri,
where she was an avid horsewoman participating in both the
American Royal and Madison Square Garden horse shows; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Vassar College, Hulda was on the
editorial staff of the Vassar Miscellany News, and in 1938, she
interviewed Eleanor Roosevelt for the Sweetheart Soap radio
program; after graduation, she earned her private pilot's
license at a civilian pilot training school; there she met the
love of her life, Jack S. "Honey" Kitchen, with whom she was
happily married for 54 years; and
WHEREAS, While Jack was serving in the Navy Air Corps,
Hulda worked in an aircraft factory as a "Rosie the Riveter" to
support our troops during World War II; in 1949, the couple moved
to El Paso, where she started a preschool and published a weekly
newspaper; she also taught at Bowie High School for several
years; and
WHEREAS, Hulda loved El Paso and contributed greatly to
the city through her community involvement; she was president of
the Junior League of El Paso and the Women's Department of the
Chamber of Commerce; she was also active in the Del Norte Chapter
of the Daughters of the American Revolution and numerous other
civic and charitable organizations; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, she was an active member of
the First Presbyterian Church of El Paso and enjoyed socializing
with members of her book club and bridge groups; she loved
traveling and was an enthusiastic sports fan and supporter of
The University of Texas at El Paso; and
WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, and generosity,
Hulda gave unselfishly of her time to others, and her eternal
optimism, her warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by
those who knew her; and
WHEREAS, Hulda Kitchen lived her life to the fullest and
was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she leaves behind
memories that will be treasured forever by her family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
78th Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Hulda Rhodes Kitchen: her
son and daughter-in-law, Jack S. Kitchen, Jr., and Carolyn; her
daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Dennis Eggemeyer; and her
five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Hulda Rhodes Kitchen.
