R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The American Society for Healthcare Risk Management
(ASHRM) has designated June 21-25, 2004, as National Healthcare
Risk Management Week; and
WHEREAS, Centering on the theme "Quest: Safe and Trusted
Healthcare," the 2004 observance is designed to celebrate the ways
in which risk managers strive to promote safe and effective
patient-care practices, the preservation of financial resources,
and the maintenance of safe working environments; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1980 and operating under the aegis of
the American Hospital Association, ASHRM is made up of more than
4,400 individual members who represent health care, insurance, law,
and related professions; through a variety of effective and
innovative strategies and programs, ASHRM supports these
professionals and contributes to advances in this critical area of
health care management; and
WHEREAS, The society's next annual conference, which is being
held October 17-20, 2004, in Orlando, Florida, will bring together
more than 1,800 professionals for a number of educational programs
and an industry exhibition; throughout the year, the society
sponsors a variety of audio conferences, one of which is scheduled
for June 23, 2004, during National Healthcare Risk Management Week;
and
WHEREAS, Other special ASHRM programs in 2004 include the
presentation of modules for the Barton Certificate in Healthcare
Risk Management and a preparatory session for the Certified
Professional in Healthcare Risk Management examination; and
WHEREAS, In order to keep its members abreast of essential
knowledge and skills, the society monitors a range of issues and
developments that affect the risk management profession; receiving
particular attention are developments in health care delivery
systems, regulations, and technology; and
WHEREAS, ASHRM promotes communication among its members and
the dissemination of vital information through its Forum newsletter
and its Journal of Healthcare Risk Management; the society's
publication program also produces a tool kit series, a practical
tips series, and the respected Risk Management Handbook for Health
Care Organizations; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the society sponsors special-interest
Internet discussion groups centering on such topics as rural health
care, patient safety, risk financing, compliance, and workers'
compensation/safety and security; and
WHEREAS, ASHRM honors and encourages professional
development through its designation of society fellows and
distinguished fellows, titles that acknowledge successively higher
levels of educational attainment, experience, and professional
leadership; the society also confers annual chapter recognition
awards; and
WHEREAS, For nearly a quarter of a century, the staff and
members of ASHRM have made exceptional contributions to improving
the safety of our health care system; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby recognize June 21-25, 2004,
as National Healthcare Risk Management Week and encourage all
Texans to join in expressing appreciation to this nation's health
care risk managers.
