R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Harlan "Jim" Berger has completed his term as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas, and his exemplary service in this role has earned him additional respect and admiration from his colleagues in the insurance industry; and WHEREAS, A Texas native, Mr. Berger grew up in Schulenburg and attended Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets; after graduating as a distinguished military student in 1968, he began a three-and-a-half-year stint with the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of captain; and WHEREAS, Mr. Berger's association with the insurance industry began in 1972, when he was hired by the firm of Houstoun, Stevenson & Cummings; in 1984, he joined Houstoun Woodard and Associates as office manager and head of the accounting department; in addition, he is the longtime president of Houston's Insurance Alliance and played a key role in the formation of that organization; and WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman has served on the insurance advisory boards of Chubb, CNA, Trinity Insurance Services, Inc., and Texas Mutual Insurance Company, among others, and his noteworthy efforts were recognized when he was selected as the first recipient of the Zurich Insurance Companies' Pathfinder Award; and WHEREAS, Hard work, dedication, and a thorough knowledge of the insurance industry led to Mr. Berger's election as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Houston in 2000 and his subsequent election as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas in 2003; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Mr. Berger has successfully balanced the demands of family and work, enjoying the love and support of his wife, Beth, and his sons, Travis and Patrick; active with the Williams Syndrome Foundation, he is an inspiration to his family, friends, and colleagues, and it is a pleasure to honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Harlan "Jim" Berger on his successful term as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas and extend best wishes to him for continued happiness in all his endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Berger as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
