H.R. No. 31 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Sam Phillips Braswell on February 8, 2004, at the age of 93, has deeply saddened his family and many friends in the Kerrville community; and WHEREAS, Born on March 17, 1910, in Dallas, he moved with his family during World War I to Clarendon, where his father was a newspaper publisher for many years; he was an alumnus of Clarendon Junior College and The University of Texas, where he played tennis and baseball, including an unforgettable scrimmage against Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees; and WHEREAS, Mr. Braswell married Cecelia Atteberry on August 10, 1930, and the couple enjoyed a rewarding marriage that brought them great joy over the course of their remarkable 73 years together; and WHEREAS, In 1936, Mr. Braswell joined the Kerrville Mountain Sun newspaper and later operated the Winnsboro Weekly News with his wife; in 1944, the couple bought the Coleman Democratic-Voice newspaper, and returning to the Hill Country in 1948, they became co-owners of the publication known today as the Kerrville Daily Times; during the late 1950s, Mr. Braswell served as associate manager of the Victoria Advocate, the state's second oldest newspaper, and his wife was employed in the newspaper's advertising department; in 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Braswell purchased a Kerrville printing company, which is known today as ADCO Advertising and Printing and is operated by the couple's son and daughter-in-law; and WHEREAS, For a 12-year span beginning in 1977, Mr. Braswell held the post of public relations representative for Charles Schreiner Bank in Kerrville while his wife worked in the advertising department and assisted with the Schreiner Ladies Club; and WHEREAS, This highly regarded gentleman was called on to share his expertise with policy makers at the statewide level when he was appointed by Governor Allan Shivers to help form the Texas Commission on Higher Education, and he also served as an associate of former state representative and Texas railroad commissioner Jim Nugent and was a Kerr County consultant and friend of President Lyndon Baines Johnson; and WHEREAS, Blessed with a cherished family and a host of friends, Sam Braswell distinguished himself throughout his lifetime, and he will long be fondly remembered by all those who were fortunate to have known him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life and accomplishments of Sam Phillips Braswell and extend deepest sympathy to his family: to his wife of 73 years, Cecelia Braswell; to his son and daughter-in-law, Sam Harben and Betty Jean Braswell; to his grandchildren, Samuel Lynn Braswell, Carol Denise Bernhard, and Robin Aileen Perrin; to his great-grandchildren, Samuel Taylor Braswell, Andrew Phillip Braswell, Megan Leigh Bernhard, Ryan David Perrin, Ashton Elise Perrin, and Emma Renee Perrin; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sam Phillips Braswell.
