R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Howdy Smith of Weslaco truly merits special
recognition for the many contributions he has made to the
betterment of his community through his extensive volunteer
activities; and
WHEREAS, This dedicated model citizen began his volunteering
efforts in Alaska, where he taught school for 32 years; despite his
busy professional life, Mr. Smith found time to volunteer with a
number of area senior citizen programs, including the Federation of
the Blind, which operated a fleet of small buses to transport senior
citizens and disabled persons; and
WHEREAS, After Mr. Smith retired, he moved to Weslaco in the
early 1990s and continued his tradition of community volunteerism
by giving generously of his time to Amigos del Valle, which
administers comprehensive human services to the elderly of the
lower Rio Grande Valley; during his five years of service to that
worthy organization, Mr. Smith helped organize dances and other
activities for area senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, Now serving as the president of the Weslaco parks
and recreation board, this dynamic 76-year-old spends most of his
time volunteering for activities sponsored by that department,
including the Texas Senior Games; with more than 35 events ranging
from horseshoes to dominoes, the popular Senior Games offer
residents 50 and older numerous opportunities for recreation,
exercise, and social interaction; and
WHEREAS, Howdy Smith's fine example of community spirit and
volunteerism is an inspiration to all Texans, and his commitment to
improving the quality of life for countless senior citizens in
South Texas has earned him the enduring respect and admiration of
all who are privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby honor Howdy Smith for his
noteworthy contributions to the people of his community; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
