R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The untimely death of Dennis Ray Garza of Round Rock
on March 29, 2004, at the age of 42, has brought a profound loss to
the family members and many friends of this distinguished Texan;
and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Mr. Garza was a
skilled debater and golfer who competed at the statewide level in
both vocations during his years as a student at King High School; he
went on to graduate from Texas Tech University and The University of
Texas School of Law in Austin, winning the latter's mock trial
competition before earning his law degree in 1986; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Garza became one of the Lone Star State's top
litigators and worked as a senior attorney and deputy division
chief for the general litigation division of the attorney general's
office and as a litigator for American Airlines in Dallas over the
course of his career; in each position, Mr. Garza demonstrated the
utmost professionalism and integrity, earning the esteem and
admiration of his colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Passionate in the pursuit of equal treatment for
all, he championed the cause of civil rights in local and state
politics, and he served as president of Austin LULAC Council 650 and
the South Austin Mexican American Democrats; in addition, he
graciously gave of his time and talents as an officer of the Capital
Metro Board, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the River City
Youth Foundation; and
WHEREAS, A valued congregant of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Catholic Church in Austin and highly involved in the ACTS movement,
Mr. Garza was also a devoted family man who treasured his
relationship with his wife, Rita, and their two children, Angelica
and Jonathan; and
WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know Dennis Ray Garza
will long remember him with affection and admiration, and his
legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people whose
lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Dennis Ray Garza and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his
family: to his wife, Rita Garza; to his children, Angelica and
Jonathan Garza; to his parents, Arnold and Anita Garza; to his
brothers, Arnold David Garza and his wife, Tonie, and Dr. James E.
Garza; to his grandmother, Lillie Delgado; and to the other family
members and friends of this esteemed man; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dennis Ray
Garza.
