R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Alpine community lost a cherished friend, neighbor, and educator with the passing of Dr. Marcelino Abelardo "Abe" Baeza on February 1, 2004, at the age of 59; and WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of this West Texas community, Dr. Baeza was born May 14, 1944, to proud parents Marcelino and Anita Tarango Baeza; after graduating from Alpine High School, he went on to receive his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Sul Ross State University and later earned his doctorate from Texas Tech University; and WHEREAS, Dr. Baeza held a distinguished 34-year career at his beloved alma mater, Sul Ross State University, where, over the course of his tenure, he served as head of the Spanish department, English professor, and director of Title V; in addition, this accomplished scholar wrote several books and published a host of articles in his lifetime; and WHEREAS, A popular and influential presence on campus, Dr. Baeza was a committed advocate of Mexican-American equality; he founded the Mexican-American Fiesta pageant, serving as its master of ceremonies and writing a number of plays en español for the event; and WHEREAS, Respected by his colleagues, admired by his students, and loved by his family and friends, Dr. Baeza will long be missed by those who were privileged to know him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Marcelino Abelardo Baeza and extend sincere sympathy to his family: to his sisters, Francisca Mendoza and Maria T. Gonzales; to his brothers, Tomas Tarango and Armando Baeza; and to the other relatives and many friends of this deeply admired gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Abe Baeza.
