R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost a distinguished native son
with the passing of the Honorable Tom Hugh Stovell on March 24,
2004, at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, Born April 19, 1919, Mr. Stovell earned an
accounting degree from Texas A&M University and later served his
country with distinction in World War II as a major in the U.S. Army
Air Corps; this courageous soldier was honored for his exceptional
valor and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his attempts
at rescuing fellow airmen; and
WHEREAS, In 1948, Mr. Stovell was elected to the Texas House
of Representatives, where he proudly and ably represented citizens
of Brewster, Kinney, Val Verde, Maverick, and Terrell counties
during the 51st Legislature; and
WHEREAS, This notable Texan later began an exemplary career
in the financial industry, working with institutions throughout
West Texas and serving as president of the First National Bank of
Fort Stockton and as senior vice president of Commercial Bank and
Trust in Midland; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Stovell devoted himself to
his family, sharing many wonderful years with his beloved wife,
Dorothy, who preceded him in death; a man of integrity, wisdom, and
fortitude, he will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in
the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay special tribute to the
life of Tom Hugh Stovell and extend sincere sympathy to the members
of his family: to his son, Steven Charles Schroeder; to his
daughter, Cynthia Stovell Choate and her husband, Gary; to his five
beloved grandchildren; and to the other relatives and many friends
of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Tom
Stovell.
