R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The citizens of Waco lost a valued friend and esteemed civic leader with the death of Aaron Hoppenstein on February 14, 2004, at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman graduated from Waco High School, where he was elected student council president, before enrolling at Baylor University; answering the call to aid his country, Mr. Hoppenstein joined the U.S. Navy and valiantly served as a lieutenant in the Pacific before returning to Baylor to complete his education; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hoppenstein pursued a career as an independent insurance agent and excelled in his chosen vocation, eventually earning the North American Insurance Company's "Agent of the Year" title in 1971; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hoppenstein was involved in a host of noteworthy organizations and served as president of both the Waco Mutual Insurance Underwriters Association and the Economic Opportunities Advancement Corporation; he was also appointed chair of the Citizens Advisory Board to the Juvenile Judge for McLennan County and was active in the Grand Jury Association; and WHEREAS, Highly regarded in his community, he worked tirelessly to enrich the lives of others; in addition to serving as president and executive secretary of his local B'nai B'rith chapter and vice president of the Southwestern Regional Advisory Board of the Anti-Defamation League, he served on the board and as president of Congregation Agudath Jacob and gave of his time and talents to benefit the Heart of Texas Lions Club, diligently supporting their many worthwhile programs; and WHEREAS, Mr. Hoppenstein was recognized for his outstanding efforts when he received the prestigious Liberty Bell Award and was honored with resolutions by the McLennan County Commissioners Court and the Texas Senate for his contributions to the betterment of humanity; and WHEREAS, The devoted husband of Shirley Hoppenstein and father of Sherri, Debra, Marla, and Susan, Mr. Hoppenstein was a committed family man who took great pride in his six grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Aaron Hoppenstein will long remember his love of family and community, as well as his generosity, integrity, and compassion; his legacy will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Aaron Hoppenstein and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Shirley Lynn Hoppenstein; to his daughters, Sherri Radoff, Debra Hoppenstein, Marla Oddes, and Susan Kluk; to his grandchildren, Jennifer Radoff, Robert Radoff, Daniel Radoff, Sivan Oddes, Zoe Oddes, and Amit Oddes; to his sister, Naomi Dunn; to his brother, David Hoppenstein; and to the other relatives and many friends of this fine man; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Aaron Hoppenstein.
