R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, Michael Nieto of Weslaco has received The University 
of Texas Pan American (UTPA)-Baylor College of Medicine Pre-Medical 
Honors College scholarship; and
	WHEREAS, A senior at Weslaco High School, Mr. Nieto was one of 
16 scholarship recipients whose academic achievements, 
extracurricular activities, and community involvement stood out 
among the 100 applicants for this prestigious eight-year 
scholarship, which covers tuition for undergraduate studies at UTPA 
and for medical school at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston; 
the Premedical Honors College at UTPA was established in 1993 as 
part of a Hispanic Centers of Excellence initiative designed to 
recruit talented Hispanic students to medicine and to promote 
diversity in the field; and
	WHEREAS, Mr. Nieto, who spends his leisure time coaching 
Little League, plans to specialize in pediatrics; the son of Roman 
Nieto, a middle school principal, and Hortencia Nieto, a school 
district facilitator, and the brother of Roman Nieto, Jr., a 
previous recipient of this scholarship, Michael Nieto credits his 
family with inspiring the hard work and perseverance required to 
achieve his goals; and
	WHEREAS, This charismatic 18-year-old is undoubtedly a 
source of pride for his family, his school, and his community, and 
it is a privilege to honor him at this time for his dedication and 
commitment to excellence; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas 
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Michael Nieto 
on the receipt of The University of Texas Pan American-Baylor 
College of Medicine Pre-Medical Honors College scholarship and 
extend to him sincere best wishes for all his future endeavors; and, 
be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 
prepared for Mr. Nieto as an expression of high regard by the Texas 
House of Representatives.
