R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of the Reverend Monsignor Timothy J. Murphy, P.A., V.G., J.C.L., of Midland on January 16, 2004, at the age of 68, has brought a profound loss to the family and friends of this esteemed spiritual leader; and WHEREAS, Born on August 31, 1935, in Queens, New York, Monsignor Murphy graduated from Cathedral Seminary High School in Brooklyn before completing his college course work at St. Mary's Seminary in Kentucky and his theological studies at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio; following his ordination to the Catholic priesthood on May 26, 1962, Monsignor Murphy earned a licentiate degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he studied canon law; and WHEREAS, Monsignor Murphy ably served the religious community in a host of positions throughout his illustrious tenure with the church; pastor at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo, Holy Family Church in Abilene, and, most recently, St. Ann Church in Midland, he also served as judicial vicar of the Diocese of San Angelo since 1967, chancellor of the diocese from 1970 to 1980, and vicar general of the diocese from 1980 until his passing; in addition to overseeing the construction of new churches and an office building, Monsignor Murphy demonstrated commendable leadership as a diocesan consultor, as a superintendent of schools, and as a member of the Presbyteral Council, the Priests' Personnel Board, the Priests' Pension Plan, and the Diocesan Finance Council; and WHEREAS, Twice recognized for his excellence by Pope John Paul II, Monsignor Murphy was named a Chaplain of Honor to His Holiness in 1989, and in 1995 he was promoted to Protonotary Apostolic, the highest degree of domestic prelate in the Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, Timothy J. Murphy was a man of sterling character, unwavering conviction, and upstanding faith; although he will be greatly missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of the Reverend Monsignor Timothy J. Murphy and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his sister, Colonel Patricia Murphy, USAF, retired; to his brother, Emmet Murphy; to his nieces and nephews; and to the other relatives and many friends of this beloved man; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the Reverend Monsignor Timothy J. Murphy.
