R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The week of May 2-8, 2004, is being observed as North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week to highlight the importance of safe conditions and procedures in the workplace; and WHEREAS, Instituted in 1997, NAOSH Week is sponsored jointly by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers, and the Mexican Society of Registered Engineers; and WHEREAS, The more than 30,000 members of the 93-year-old nonprofit ASSE, the oldest and largest safety organization, are committed to protecting people, property, and the environment; during NAOSH Week 2004, the Central Texas Chapter of ASSE is working with the Austin Safety Training Consortium to recognize the safety efforts of local companies; and WHEREAS, Every day of the year, millions of people go to work and return home safely, due in part to the efforts of occupational safety, health, and environmental practitioners; through research, consultation, supervision, and management, these professionals are dedicated to eliminating workplace fatalities and injuries; and WHEREAS, Much work remains to be done, for every year more than 5,000 people in the United States die from job-related injuries, and tens of thousands of others die from occupational disease; and WHEREAS, The promotion of workplace safety has immense consequences, not only for employees and their families, but also for worker productivity and the economy; and WHEREAS, It is imperative that employers, employees, and the public understand the importance of preventing illness and injury in the workplace; NAOSH Week provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the benefits of implementing safety, health, and environmental programs, as well as the significant role that related professionals play in promoting the well-being of workers across North America; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby recognize May 2-8, 2004, as North American Occupational Safety and Health Week and extend to all safety, health, and environmental professionals heartfelt appreciation for their tremendous contributions.
