H.R. No. 122
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The members of the I Am That I Am Academy Senior
Class of 2004 truly merit special recognition on the occasion of
their graduation from that fine institution on May 28, 2004; and
WHEREAS, The exceptional young men and women who compose the
school's senior class may proudly reflect on their many
accomplishments as they stand on the threshold of a future bright
with promise; those graduation candidates include Willie Cooks,
Jr., Martavius Curry, Latoya Fisher, Velma Fisher, Corey Gee, Keith
Hemphill, Montoya Jackson, Montrell Jackson, Michael Johnson,
Brandon Jones, Cherika Jones, LaTarry Kellum, Dexter Lewis, Tristan
Osby, Ashley Thomas, and Robin Williams; and
WHEREAS, In the mid-1980s, Delores Beall set out to help the
youth of the Oak Cliff community in south Dallas who were exposed to
the dangers of drugs, street gangs, and vandalism; with monthly
donations from concerned citizens, she organized the I Am That I Am
Training Center, where she transported neighborhood children and
teenagers in the evenings for after-school tutoring; in 1998, Ms.
Beall's program received accreditation by the Texas State Board of
Education as the I Am That I Am Academy of Fine Arts, Science and
Technology Charter Public School, with a stated mission of
empowering children and youth with the skills and tools of today to
become part of the technology workforce for the 21st century; and
WHEREAS, The 16 graduating seniors of the Dallas school faced
significant challenges when they began their education, but with
hard work, determination, and the support of their families and a
dedicated faculty and staff, they have reached their goal of
attaining a high school diploma, and it is a privilege to honor this
future generation of leaders; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate the I Am That
I Am graduating seniors of 2004 and extend to the students sincere
best wishes for continued success in all of their endeavors; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the class as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
