R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 2003-2004 Baylor University Lady Bears
basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I
Women's Basketball Championships for the first time in the
program's history; and
WHEREAS, The Lady Bears led the Big 12 in scoring with 77.3
points a game, outscoring opponents by 16.3 points a game;
defensively, the team held opponents to just 60.9 points a game and
a 36 percent shooting mark; and
WHEREAS, Seeded fourth in the Midwest Region, the Lady Bears
charged through the tournament's early rounds, defeating Loyola
Marymount 71-60 and taking care of Florida 91-76; the team
ultimately suffered a narrow 71-69 loss to top seed Tennessee in the
round of 16; and
WHEREAS, Head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson, who has guided her
Baylor squad to its fourth straight 20-win season, ably schooled
her players in the finer points of basketball while also
emphasizing the virtues of good sportsmanship and academic
excellence; she was supported in these efforts by associate head
coach Bill Brock, assistant coach Johnny Derrick, assistant coach
Jennifer Roberts, and graduate assistant Rekha Patterson; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to excellence both individually and as a
team are players Monique Jones, Chelsea Whitaker, Chanelle Fox,
Jessika Stratton, Chameka Scott, Jordan Davis, Tiffanie Blackmon,
Melanie Hamerly, Sophia Young, Abiola Wabara, Steffanie Blackmon,
Dionne Brown, and Emily Niemann; and
WHEREAS, These talented young women have achieved a level of
excellence on the hard court that is unparalleled in the history of
Baylor women's basketball, and they are a tremendous source of
pride for the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate the players
and coaches of the Baylor University Lady Bears basketball team for
reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball
Championships and extend to them sincere best wishes for future
success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
