H.R. No. 136


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The passing of Travis D. Shelton of Lubbock at the age of 82 has deeply saddened the family and many friends of this beloved man; and WHEREAS, This native Texan was born January 30, 1921, in Lynn County, grew up in Tahoka, attended Texas Tech University, and went on to receive a law degree from The University of Texas; and WHEREAS, During World War II, he served his country with distinction as a navigator aboard a seagoing tug in the Pacific Ocean; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shelton married the former Mary Lou Metcalf in 1946, and the couple shared a rich family life with their three children and four grandchildren; and WHEREAS, He was elected to three consecutive terms as Lubbock's district attorney and served as president of the State Bar of Texas and the Lubbock County Bar Association; his professional affiliations included the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, of which he was a charter member; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shelton gave generously of his time and talent to his community in roles that included president of the Lubbock Lions Club, Sunday school teacher with Westminster Presbyterian Church, and delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention; his civic contributions were recognized by the Lubbock Sales Executive Association in 1976 when he was named executive of the year; and WHEREAS, Although he is deeply missed, Travis Shelton will long be remembered for his devotion to his family, profession, and community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Travis D. Shelton and extend sincere sympathy to his wife, Mary Lou Shelton; to his children, Steve Shelton, Shelly Livingston and her husband, Gill Livingston, and Christy Thompson and her husband, Dr. Paul Thompson; to his grandchildren, Paige Bell, Blake Bell, Olivia Shelton, and Travis Shelton; to his twin sister, Avis Buchanan, to his brother, Marshall Shelton; and to all those who mourn the passing of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Travis Shelton.
