R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2004 marks the 125th anniversary of the Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston; and WHEREAS, The church traces its roots to 1879 when the Reverend W. W. Navigan presided over the first service in a two-room shotgun house on St. Charles Street; services were held at that modest structure until a proper facility was erected at a lot on Dowling Street; and WHEREAS, Since those early days, the Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church has benefited from the leadership of a number of outstanding clergymen; that distinguished roster includes the Reverend Lorenzo Williams, the Reverend J. R. Lofton, the Reverend W. A. Joshua, the Reverend William Hayward Banks, the Reverend Murphy H. Peterson, the Reverend David M. Roberts, and interim pastors, the Reverend Jesse Jones and the Reverend Carlos Washington; and WHEREAS, In 1993, the Reverend Danny Davis was called to shepherd the congregation of Jordan Grove; under the inspired guidance of Reverend Davis for the past eleven years, the church has conducted a successful Soul Winning Campaign, expanded its facilities, created a Day Bible Study Class, and welcomed more than 500 new members to its thriving congregation; and WHEREAS, For 125 years, the Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston has provided steadfast spiritual and moral guidance to the community it serves, and its continued existence is a tribute to the commitment and faith of its leaders and members, past and present; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate the members of the Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church on the joyous occasion of the church's 125th anniversary and extend to them best wishes for a memorable and meaningful observance; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
