H.R. No. 191


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Donna Stockton-Hicks of Austin has been named the first recipient of the SafePlace Guardian Award, an honor reserved for those very special individuals who dare to make a difference and become involved when faced with a daunting problem in their community; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Stockton-Hicks, who knows firsthand the difficulties faced by people seeking to end an abusive relationship, was an integral part of Austin's abuse prevention scene long before the inception of SafePlace; active in securing the merger of the Austin Rape Crisis Center and the Center for Battered Women that resulted in SafePlace, she has ably served as a member and chair of its board of trustees, and along with her husband Steve, chaired the organization's past two Valentine's Celebrations; in addition, this remarkable woman made a pledge of $1 million toward creating and building the Stockton-Hicks Family Tree Child Development Center for children involved in the SafePlace Family Shelter and Supportive Housing Program; and WHEREAS, Compassionate, selfless, and a true inspiration to all, Donna Stockton-Hicks has proven her commitment to combating abuse and creating a brighter future for innumerable Austin residents; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Donna Stockton-Hicks on her receipt of the SafePlace Guardian Award and commend her for her many good works in the battle against violence; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Stockton-Hicks as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
