R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Students from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent
School District have brought great honor to their schools with
their fine showing at the Texas SkillsUSA-VICA competition held in
Fort Worth on March 24-27, 2004; and
WHEREAS, In the cosmetology category, the following
individuals were named to the opening and closing ceremonies
first-place team: Melissa Aguirre, Cinthia Trevino, and Claudia
Salinas of Edinburg High School, Jacoba Bermudez of Edinburg North
High School, and Yandy Cardenas, Mabely Gutierrez, and Laura
Quintanilla of Johnny Economedes High School; Christy Alvarado of
Johnny Economedes High School was equally successful when she took
first-place honors in the nail art demonstration contest; and
WHEREAS, The diversified career preparation division saw
Cynthia Rivera of Edinburg High School take first place in the basic
health care technical contest, while fellow Edinburg High School
student Vanessa Hernandez placed second in the practical nursing
technical contest; and
WHEREAS, In media technology, Edinburg High School student
Oscar Sepulveda garnered third-place honors in the TV camera
operator technical contest; in the metal trades competitions, Jose
Torres of Johnny Economedes High School won second place in the
precision machining technical contest and Alfredo Elicerio of
Edinburg North High School finished in third place in the metal
fabrication technical contest; and
WHEREAS, Each of the three Edinburg CISD high schools was
admirably represented in the welding category: in the metal
fabrication technical contest, Mark Ross of Edinburg High School
took first place and Jorge Gonzalez of Johnny Economedes High
School took second; in the general welding category, Eddie Hinojosa
of Edinburg North High School and Mark Ross of Edinburg High School
won Best of Show project awards; and
WHEREAS, An organization for students engaged in trade and
industrial education, Texas SkillsUSA-VICA brings together
educators, administrators, corporations, labor organizations,
trade associations, and government agencies in a coordinated effort
to address the nation's need for a globally competitive, educated,
and skilled workforce; members of the organization have an
opportunity to test their abilities and excel beyond the classroom
in local, state, and national competitions, such as the statewide
"Champions at Work" competition in Fort Worth, where these
competition participants demonstrated a dedication and a
determination that foretell a bright and promising future; and
WHEREAS, Representative Aaron Peña has justly recognized
these Edinburg CISD students by passing this resolution in their
behalf during the 4th Called Session of the 78th Legislature; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate the Edinburg
Consolidated Independent School District students for their
excellent performance at the Texas SkillsUSA-VICA competition;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
for the Edinburg CISD as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
