R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Major league all-star Jimmy Wynn enjoyed a storied 15-year career in baseball, during which he established himself as one of the premier center fielders of his era, and this Houston sports hero is indeed deserving of appreciation for his contributions to professional baseball and the city of Houston; and WHEREAS, Drafted in 1963 by the Houston Colt .45s, the 21-year-old rookie center fielder quickly garnered the nickname "Toy Cannon" after recording 5 outfield assists in 53 games; in his 11 seasons with Houston, 2 as a Colt .45 and 9 as an Astro, Mr. Wynn set numerous club records, including totals of 1,291 hits, 223 home runs, and 719 RBIs; and WHEREAS, After his trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1974, Mr. Wynn continued to excel, helping his new team to win the National League pennant that same year; he ended the season with 32 home runs, 104 runs, 108 RBIs, and 108 walks; he decided to retire three years later, following stints with the Atlanta Braves in 1976 and with both the New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Brewers in 1977; and WHEREAS, The "Toy Cannon" accomplished several significant feats during his career: he set a single-season record of 37 home runs for the Houston Astros in 1967 that would last nearly 30 years, he battled the great Hank Aaron for the home run title that same year, and he was the first batter to smash a homer into the upper deck of the Astrodome; in addition, this dynamic ballplayer greatly contributed to his teams' successes by leading his league twice in putouts, assists, double plays, and walks; and WHEREAS, This consummate athlete has earned many distinctions throughout his career, and, as one of the first star players of the Astros, Mr. Wynn remains a source of tremendous pride to the city of Houston and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend Jimmy Wynn for the accomplishments and honors that he attained during his career in professional baseball and extend to him best wishes for continued happiness in the years to come; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Wynn as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
