R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Billie Bean Briggs has earned the Milken Family
Foundation 2003 National Educator Award, and she is truly worthy of
this singular honor; and
WHEREAS, Presented by the Milken Family Foundation, the
National Educator Award, which includes a $25,000 cash prize,
recognizes education professionals who have made significant
contributions to fostering excellence in the classroom, and Mrs.
Briggs is one of only 100 teachers in the nation to be selected for
the accolade in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Briggs, a sixth grade math teacher for Galena
Park Independent School District, has an impressive record of
service that speaks volumes about her commitment to her chosen
profession; and
WHEREAS, While serving as chair of the school's math
department, Mrs. Briggs has developed and implemented innovative
teaching methods that have helped students improve their overall
scores and comprehension of the material; and
WHEREAS, This outstanding educator has further demonstrated
her commitment to improving the lives of young people by lending her
time and talents to serve as lead sponsor for the National Junior
Honor Society and Math and Science Club at Cobb Sixth Grade Campus;
and
WHEREAS, Her enthusiasm for education has been duly
recognized, as Mrs. Briggs has been named Teacher of the Year,
Rookie Teacher of the Year, and Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year over
the course of her career; and
WHEREAS, Billie Bean Briggs exemplifies the highest ideals of
the teaching profession, and the students of Galena Park
Independent School District continue to reap the benefits of her
immense abilities and experience; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Billie Bean
Briggs on her receipt of the Milken Family Foundation 2003 National
Educator Award and commend her dedication to educational
excellence; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Briggs as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
